Charlotte, NC, USA, December 8, 2022 -- Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) announced that it is expanding its strategic partnership with Nexceris, Inc., a developer of Li-ion Tamer® lithium-ion gas detection solutions, to help improve the safety of electric vehicles. The two sides will work together to introduce advanced car-sensing technology to warn electric vehicle batteries of thermal runaway and prevent fires caused by overheating inside the batteries.
With the transformation of industrial electrification, represented by the automobile industry, global electric vehicle sales doubled year-on-year to nearly 7 million in 2021 [1]. Today, many electric vehicles are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which in rare cases can pose significant safety risks such as fire and endanger drivers, homeowners who park electric vehicles in their garages, and logistics personnel who transport them to their destinations. To help reduce these risks, automakers are aggressively introducing technology to improve safety.
"With the transition to electric vehicles around the world, there is an urgent need for automakers to provide lithium-ion batteries that can operate properly and safely at all stages of the life cycle. Honeywell's proven solutions support this transformation, helping customers reduce safety risks while expanding their EV business," "By adding Li-ion Tamer® technology to Honeywell's battery monitoring sensor suite, we will help automakers enhance their battery health monitoring systems to detect thermal runaway earlier," said Victor Verissimo, general manager of the transportation product line in Honeywell's Sensing and Safety Technologies business.
The two companies will work with global automotive leaders to provide advanced gas detection solutions for electric vehicle battery packs to enable early intervention and help avoid significant property damage and safety issues.
"Working with Honeywell will help us strengthen battery monitoring and enable the global transition to an era of electric vehicles," said Kyle Shen, Nexceris President and CEO. "Lithium-ion battery fires are very dangerous and often difficult to control. "Combined with our shared expertise in battery sensing and gas detection technologies and Honeywell's extensive manufacturing capabilities, we are committed to providing automotive customers with more advanced safety solutions to meet the growing demand for lithium-ion batteries."
Honeywell offers a wide range of lithium-ion battery safety and performance solutions, including sensors that monitor the health of electric vehicle batteries in battery management systems, gas detection solutions that cover the entire manufacturing process, and electrical safety personal protective equipment that protects workers in hazardous conditions. Back in 2020, Honeywell entered into a strategic partnership with Nexceris to combine Honeywell's very early smoke alarm technology with Li-ion Tamer®'s volatile gas detection technology to address the safety of lithium-ion battery systems in energy storage applications, providing security redundancy to protect facilities of all sizes.
In China, in response to the demand of the new energy vehicle industry, Honeywell integrates its own product and technological advantages to enable the whole industry chain of new energy vehicles to achieve high-quality sustainable development. Currently, Honeywell sensors and other products have been widely used in China's new energy vehicle companies to help customers improve battery safety and optimize range estimation. In the field of energy storage, Honeywell has established long-term partnerships with many Chinese companies to provide them with sensing and hazardous gas detection solutions. For example, Honeywell Sensepoint XCL® gas detection products are reliable and easy to use, helping energy storage companies in China detect gas leaks and avoid the risk of thermal runaway.
New energy technological innovation and industrial upgrading have become a major measure to further promote the energy revolution, and also a major force to achieve sustainable development and the goal of "dual carbon". In China, Honeywell firmly implements the localization development strategy of "East serves East". based on the new development pattern, Honeywell joins hands with upstream and downstream partners in the industry to promote the application of Honeywell's mature technology in the new energy industry and contribute to the high-quality sustainable development of China.
